Today’s sweet reward! Honey from our own honey bees. What a learning journey it has been as I’m learning the fine art of beekeeping. So exciting to have harvested almost 10 gallons of honey on our first harvest! #honey #beekeeperslife #beerstagram #permaculture #honeybees

Tis the season for preserving! As the garden continues to produce a bounty of veggies, some things are heading into the freezer and others into canning jars for the season. The sweet corn we actually did not grow here at the farm this year, but got a large batch from an Amish family up in Pennsylvania to put up in the freezer. Of course we saved some out for fresh eating. ๐Ÿ˜‹ There’s nothing that says summer then fresh corn on the cob. Brian also put up a batch of sauerkraut, as it’s one of his favorites. I can’t say that preserving is one of my favorite activities of the season, but it sure is a whole lot more fun with a community of folks. This upcoming week I’m starting to dry elderberries for syrup and we continue to collect tomatoes into the freezer for an upcoming weekend of canning tomato sauce. What’s coming out of your garden? #canning #perserving #permaculturegarden #summertime

This past week Brian tried his hand at canning up black currant juice. He basically followed Wengers grape juice recipe- so we’ll see how this goes. So, why black currant juice? Well, Brian loves ultra running and for recovery he frequently drinks tart cherry juice which has natural antioxidants that help with muscle recovery - and guess what? So do black currants - thus trying black currant juice. And since we have such an abundance of black currants why not give it a try! #blackcurrants #antioxidant #permaculturegarden

Can I just tell you how very excited I am for elderberries! No, seriously. Out of all the Perrenial plants on our farm, this is one of my top favorites. The last 10 years I have made Elderberry syrup for our family during cold and flu season and sourced berries from Mountain Rose Herbs - which were always outstanding - but having my very own berries to harvest? Oh.My.Goodness! I think I’m just as excited about this as I am about harvesting honey!
The black currant bushes are loaded and ready for harvest! Today we spent time picking currant berries and then running a test batch to taste. Yumm!! The kitchen smelled so delicious all evening.
